Details & Model Background

This project is a creative interpretation of the traditional Rumah Gadang architecture typical of Minangkabau, adapted into a low poly style. As a developer who enjoys exploring 3D visualization, my main goal was to simplify the iconic bagonjong roof shape into efficient geometry while still maintaining a strong cultural aesthetic.

The modeling process was done entirely using 3ds Max, where the main focus was optimizing polygon count without sacrificing the building's distinctive silhouette. With efficient modeling techniques, this model is designed to be implemented across various platforms, from indie game assets to interactive web applications, ensuring lightweight performance without compromising artistic value.

Through this work, I aim to show that traditional cultural elements can blend with modern technology. The use of low poly style gives a minimalist and modern touch that is highly relevant to current visual design trends, making it a flexible asset for various creative project needs.

How the System Works

The creation of this 3D model follows industry-standard workflows to ensure optimal asset quality. The first stage begins with blocking out the basic shape using primitive objects in 3ds Max to capture the iconic bagonjong roof proportions. Each part is focused on minimizing the number of vertices and edges to keep it lightweight.

Next, the UV Unwrapping process is done manually to ensure textures can be applied neatly even when using solid colors or limited palettes. I apply the principle of clean topology so that the model has a tidy structure, which is crucial if the model is to be animated or integrated into a game engine like Unity or Unreal Engine.

The final step is the rendering and export process to universal formats such as .OBJ or .FBX. Before finalization, I check backface culling and normal maps to ensure no visual artifacts appear, so the final result is ready-to-use, clean, and has very fast real-time performance.
